Developing Phase

Your brand is a work in progress
and beginning to take root.

The most exciting brands in the world all started exactly where you are.

Building a business is all-consuming and your brand ends up getting built in the margins. Between client work, emails, and everything else on your plate, clarifying your brand keeps getting bumped. You are not behind. You are exactly where most people are.

The truth is…

Your brand pieces are not quite connected yet. Your website, your social presence, your messaging may each be doing their own thing instead of telling one clear, consistent story. When your brand is scattered, the right clients have a harder time finding you and trusting you quickly.

The good news is…

This is the most fixable phase of all. You do not need to start over. You just need a direction. The three tips below will give you a clear place to start, and the AI prompts and free word bank guide further down the page will help you find the words and language your brand has been missing. You are closer than you think.

3 Things You Can Do
Now to Develop Your Brand

Write your one-liner. For real this time.

Finish this sentence out loud: “I help do_____so they can _____.” If it takes more than one breath to say, it is too long. If it sounds mostly like it is about you, flip it. Your customer is supposed to be the hero of that sentence, not you. This one line is the seed your whole brand grows from. It belongs on your website, your Instagram bio, your email signature, and the tip of your tongue at every networking event you slightly dread attending.

Pick three words that describe how you want people to feel.

Not what you do. How working with you feels. Words like warm, sharp, trustworthy, bold, refreshingly direct. Write them on a sticky note and put them somewhere embarrassingly visible. Then before you post anything or send anything, run it through those three words. That little filter will quietly do more for your brand consistency than a full rebrand ever could.

Do a five-minute squint test across your touchpoints.

Open your website, your Instagram profile, and your email signature at the same time. Now squint. Does it look like the same person made all of this? Same colors, same energy, same general vibe? If a stranger could not connect the dots between them, that is your first project. Pick the one that feels most like you and let it set the standard for everything else.

My Favorite AI
Prompts for This Phase

Whether you are just getting started with AI or can’t live without it, here are some of my favorite prompts I use myself and with clients at this stage.

Just copy, paste into your favorite AI tool, fill in the brackets, and let it go to work.

1. Write My One-Liner

“I am a [type of business owner] who helps [describe your ideal client] with [what you do]. Write me five versions of a one-sentence brand statement that puts my customer as the hero, keeps it under 20 words, and finishes with the transformation they experience. Make each version slightly different in tone: one warm, one bold, one straightforward, one conversational, and one that sounds like I am talking to a friend.”

2. Find My Brand Personality Words

“Based on this description of my business and the clients I serve: [paste two or three sentences about what you do and who you help], suggest 10 brand personality words that could describe my brand. For each word, write one sentence explaining what kind of visual, tone, and content choices that word would lead to. Then recommend the three that work best together and explain why.”

3. Audit My Homepage Copy

“Here is the copy from my website homepage: [paste your copy]. Tell me how many sentences are written from my perspective versus my customer’s perspective. Then rewrite the three sentences that are most focused on me so they lead with what my customer gets, feels, or becomes instead. Keep my voice intact.”

4. Write My Instagram Bio

“My business is [describe what you do]. My ideal client is [describe them]. My brand personality words are [your three words]. Write five versions of an Instagram bio under 150 characters that clearly states who I help and what they get, sounds like a real person wrote it, and makes someone want to follow me or click the link.”

5. Make My Touchpoints Sound Consistent

“Here is my website tagline: [paste it]. Here is my Instagram bio: [paste it]. Here is my email signature line: [paste it]. Tell me whether these three sound like they come from the same brand. Then rewrite whichever ones feel off so all three have the same tone, energy, and message. My brand personality words are [your three words].”
